A touch screen consists of a display and a touch panel. In most cases a control system is already integrated. However, some people only refer to the touch panel as touch screen. In any case, it is about the possibility to make entries on a larger surface in order to read outputs or to display or hide key fields at the same time. For POI stations vandal-proof glass panels are required, in industry and medical technology it is necessary that the touch screen can also be operated with gloves (resistive touch panel).

Touch screens are also advantageous for multilingualism. Inputs can be made more intuitive, double-key presses are no longer necessary.
